Having a fresh $20 million in funding from prominent investors in Saudi Arabia, London and Hollywood, California, private air-transportation charter service JetSmarter have significant expansion plans. JetSmarter referred to as the “Uber of private jets,” has taken on the mission of shaking up the private aviation industry, precisely how private jets are chartered.

JetSmarter founder and CEO Sergey Petrossov said he concluded that the private jet industry was “archaic” in 2009. Petrossov says the traditional way of chartering a private jet, taking many hours speaking to multiple people, is exasperating and outdated.

Petrossov spent several years building relationships with air carriers until he finally revealed his plan for an app to charter a private jet. Finding his model to have wings, Petrossov began collaborating with vendors and officially launched the app in March 2013.

Headquartered in Florida, Petrossov’s mandate was to make private jet charter more readily available, and affordable, to the masses. JetSmarter focus is on three areas: allowing users to customize travel based on their final destination and type of aircraft; one-way flights called “JetDeals” that are cost-free to members paying a $9,000 annual membership fee; and the option of booking a single seat on an already-scheduled one-way flight in select U.S. markets.

The company has been growing by up to 20 % each month and has added over 3,000 private aircraft worldwide to its service, with the app being downloaded over 300,000 times. Like booking a car with Uber, JetSmarter users can book a plane charter via the company’s app in just a few minutes and can fly in six hours or less.

JetSmarter has customer-support offices in place or planned in areas outside the U.S., including Europe, South America, the Middle East, and Asia. JetSmarter plans to continue its global expansion, with a target of 10,000 members and a project user base numbered in the millions by January of 2017.
