When the aviation industry started making aircraft, it was more in an experimental stage, and the industry had sufficient recourses to try out new things. The genius people then have done incredible things to evolve new ideas, and thus today we see these incredibly sophisticated commercial and private jets flying. But one can say more concentration was on technicalities of improved flying and the comfort passengers were also looked after equally. It’s been a fascinating journey in the industry in last more than 100 years.
The need for and the usage of private jets is changing very fast with time. Earlier private jet flying was restricted mainly to wealthy, big corporate houses and for medical emergencies. Today the need for the private jet market is very diverse. It will be exciting to look ahead to how innovations and ideas will be incorporated, in say next 15 – 50 years of private jets journey.
For example – Aerion Corporation has already joined hands with Airbus to develop the Aerion AS2, a private supersonic jet. Also called “Concorde’s replacement” but only for personal use. It will revolutionize private aviation, likely to take its first flight in the year 2021 and officially launch in 2023. The AS2 will fly at a speed of Mach 1.5, in simple words one and half times the speed of sound. The super luxurious cabin will have room only for 8 to 12 people. This supersonic jet will have a very high price tag. Only a few elite, rich ones will afford to have it in their fleet.
In the case of the private jets’ interior with a lesser price tag, a lot of dramatic improvements are taking place. They are becoming more and more spacious and high-tech. New wireless technologies and lighter components redefine the private jet’s interiors as the designer has lots of liberties compared to commercial aircraft. Jet interiors are always blended with sophisticated engineering environments and elegance. Lufthansa Technik is working with Mercedes-Benz to develop such concepts. It provides independent spatial zones – beautifully integrated without walls, to give working and rest areas independently. It is slowly inching towards integrating super luxuries offered in luxury yachts, cruise ships, and cars with limitations in air.
Private jets are becoming more customized by the needs and type of passengers, aiming to reduce downtime for the elite individuals and focus on brands that fly them. There will always be a market for the traditional interiors, especially for the Dynasty-owned private jets. Yet, the interior designer’s role is going to be very crucial and vital in creating functional and elegant, luxurious, need-based high-tech interiors!
